The Book of Acts - Act 2: The Early Church
The Book of Acts is a folk musical telling the story of the New Testament book of Acts from the Bible. This is the second act. This is the story, told in the genre of folk music, of the start of the Christian church after the ascension of Jesus to heaven. Starting in Act 2, apostles Peter and John heal a crippled beggar who is over forty years old. They tell onlookers that their power comes from the Holy Spirit and the resurrected Christ. They take this opportunity to share the Gospel with all of the people in Solomon's Colonnade. Peter and John are then brought before the Sanhedrin against their will, and they are forced to explain how they healed the man who was lame. They take the time to share the Gospel with all the members of the sanhedrin, and then the high priests warn the apostles never to speak in this name again. The apostles join together in believer's prayer and they decide to continue their ministry, telling others about the Gospel of Jesus. the Rising Son. The musical then tells the story of Ananias and Sapphira. They withhold money from the community offering after selling a valuable piece of property. Since they both lied to God, they both fall down and die and are buried side by side. The apostles continue to teach in the name of Jesus, so they are arrested by the temple guards. They are thrown in prison, yet an angel miraculously delivers them out of prison. The following morning, they return to the temple courts, preaching the good news. The priests become very confused, and want to put all of the apostles to death, but they know they can't because many people believe in the Gospel of Jesus. The following is growing and one of the pharisees, Gamaliel, tells the Sanhedrin to proceed with caution because the apostles' purpose may be from God. His speech persuades the rest of the Sanhedrin. They have the apostles flogged, and then they let them go. The apostles rejoice for suffering from the name of Jesus, and they continue their ministry despite the orders and warnings. Even a large number of priests become obedient to the faith, and the early church continues to grow. Next, Stephen faces the Sanhedrin, he condemns the Law, points to Jesus Christ as Savior of the world, and says that the Jews have put their Messiah to death. After the song of Stephen, the Sanhedrin decides to stone Stephen to death outside the city gates. Stephen falls asleep after forgiving the assailants, and he dies. On that day, a great persecution breaks out against the early church. All the christians are scattered throughout Judea and Samaria besides the apostles. Saul begins to destroy the church, putting christians in prison. Despite the persecution, the early christians continue to share the good news. Philip proclaims Christ in Samaria, and there is a great rejoicing there as he heals the blind, sick, and paralyzed with the power of the Holy Spirit. Simon the Great, a sorcerer, is saved and baptized. Likewise, Philip leads an Ethiopian eunuch to the Lord, and he baptizes him as well. As the eunuch comes up from the water, Philip miraculously disappears and reappears in Azotus. The eunuch continues rejoicing!
